Abstract is available here. From 1997 to 2003, P. R. Buerki worked as project manager and project team member for the Gemological Institute of America on research projects that were mostly classified as company-confidential or trade-secrets, and were not released for publication. These projects included
work on the identification of natural and synthetic minerals, gemstones, and pearls,
the development of new analytical methods, techniques, and measurement protocols for the non-destructive detection of laboratory treatments of gemstones and pearls,
pilot studies to evaluate and apply new analytical techniques and instrumentation to unsolved analytical problems in the gemology field,
the modification and customization of commercial analytical instruments to laboratory-specific applications,
design and building of prototypes of proprietary analytical equipment, and
contributions to an ongoing research program to continuously optimize existing analytical procedures in support of the company's mission and to improve their bottom line.
